given that Santa Clara County v. Southern Pacific RR gave corporations all the rights of an individual, why is it that i now find it impossible to stab u-haul, the corporation?
i went to their website earlier this week and reserved a truck for this evening. they called me yesterday at 9am and told me i could have a truck from the office on fullerton tonight at 7pm. i showed up at the office at 6:55pm and asked a woman where the door was to go in. she pointed toward the back and said, "good luck." rob asked her what she meant and she told us she'd been there since four o'clock. awesome.
we got inside and the line snaked all the way to the door. to make a long story short, i sat there until 8:10 when they announced to the last ten of us (including a guy who just wanted to return a dolly but was told he had to wait in line) that there were no more trucks left.
to continue my television quoting streak:
Woman of rental car service: I know what a reservation is! Jerry: I don't think you do. If you did, I'd have a car right now. You see, you know how to take the reservation; you just don't know how to hold the reservation. And that's really the most important part of the reservation: the holding. Anybody can just take them. anyway, luckily nobody is moving into my old place anytime soon, so my landlord is cool with me staying a few extra days, so i reserved a truck with budget. u-haul gets the gas face. it figures that the one time i actually show any sort of initiative and prepare for things ahead of time, it backfires.
also, add atomly_syn to your friends list... i'm going to start making entries over there and i'll probably move completely over there once i have all the code written. |

the new enduser + atomly track (a remix of "The Breed" by Subsektor) is posted at enduser's myspace profile. it is, obviously, the one called "enduser atomly subsektor." you don't need a myspace account to listen to it. lemme know what you think. |

i created a del.icio.us account yesterday. i also decided to catch up with 2002 and implemented syndication of the del.icio.us bookmarks to atomly.com. as sntx said, "it's funny. finally the semantic web is gaining mad steam. it's awesome. tim berners-lee will have the last laugh yet."
rss syndication and aggregation is probably the most exciting technology for me in recent years. i remember a few years ago buildling (poorly) a python script to screen scrape my favorite websites and put them together in a homepage that i could use. now yahoo does that for me. it's pretty awesome that the average user now has access to a website that can aggregate all of their favorite rss feeds into one simple page with customizable layout. the web is finally doing what i want it to do. it's awesome. |

our going away party ruled. well, i guess i'm not going away, except from greektown, but whatever. it didn't really sink in until last night that jeff and emily are actually going to be gone this week. that makes me sad— i've lived with the two of them for almost three years now. oh well, more excuses to visit la and ny are never a bad thing.
anyway, the party went off perfectly. nobody peed in the hallway this time, but there were people getting it on in the bathroom once again. i also had to kick some people out of my bed at one point, though clothes were still on when i got in there.
on friday night i went to thomas brinkmann at the empty bottle and he was seriously awesome. i haven't seen a live techno set that good in quite a long time. it's really weird that the place wasn't more packed; i was honestly expecting it might sell out. oh well, more room for me.
tonight i'm going to return to the empty bottle to see ghost/xiu xiu/noxagt/double leopards. that show should be awesome.
pictures from the weekend. |

went back to fargo last weekend to visit my grandma and the rest of the family. it was a good trip, even though for a bad reason, and i was glad to get to spend some time with my family. on the way to pick up a cd of "coal miner's daughter" for my grandma i saw this sign for a duck and goose calling contest with a $5000 prize that was part of the midwest waterfowl fest. god i love north dakota. also, i love my dad's remote control. there are people starving in this very country and my dad has a remote control that could beat kasparov at chess. i know now why the terrorists hate our freedom.
on the airplane to minot i snapped this picture of myself in the airplane bathroom. it reminded me of the really tall guy driving the small car on the simpsons.
Wadlow: [lifts Nelson out of the sewer by his head]
Do you find something comical about my appearance when I'm
driving my automobile?
Nelson: Yeah.
Wadlow: Everyone needs to drive a vehicle, even the very tall.
[turns Nelson to face the car]
This was the largest auto that I could afford. Am I therefore
to be made the subject of fun?
Nelson: I guess so.
i also took a picture of this hot dog grill from the skymall catalog for grasueh... i'd kill to see an infomercial for that. anyway, it was a good trip, though brief, and went a lot smoother than i expected— i even got to visit with anthony, my best friend from elementary school, and got to see all of my relatives that i haven't seen in too long.
got back on friday afternoon and ate some chipotle that magically found it's way back out of my stomach about fifteen minutes later. mmm... i felt like ass (i heart food poisoning) so i took two pain relievers and headed over to esquire to catch ghost in the shell 2: innocence with chrise. i'm pretty sure the movie was wicked/confusing/beautiful, but i'll have to see it again not on pain relievers to be able to confirm that.
saturday i signed the lease on our new place now dubbed the jerkstore. it's right next to the blue line damen stop, which is good, because it means we can be loud as all hell, so come help us break it in on october 8th.
i ran into some people and headed over to the renegade craft fair in wicker park and then over to a barbecue at my friend jen's house. picked up some bbq chik'n and riblets on the way and remembered again why i love them so much.
from there gigolo talked me into going to the kill hannah show at the metro. tell me you wouldn't go to a sold out show for a band whose entire fan base is 17 year-old girls. okay, neither would i, but me after three margaritas would. anyway, it was a lot better than i expected. they're basically just playing 1992 to a bunch of people who were only five then. not my thing, but i remember thinking "siamese dream," "last splash" and "pretty hate machine" were the best albums in the world and that butch vig was god at one point in my life, so i can't exactly hate. for some reason i was too dumb to take pictures of the nubile crowd and instead took this. i just looked at that picture for like five minutes trying to figure out why i took it and i'm sitll stumped. i blame the margaritas.
ran into tommie and took a cab with him over to the afterparty at tre via. we got there and the dude from assassins was playing a traktor set. always nice to see people rocking out traktor proper— lots of looping, effects, etc... plus he dropped "rebel yell," and any set involving billy idol is good in my book. right about the time that tommie went on i noticed that carson daly was there. i shouted "trl" at him a few times but he didn't hear me. once again i was too stupid to take a picture, because in retrospect it would've been awesome to put my camera to good use.
as if this night wasn't dumb enough, i somehow got talked into going to crobar to keep partying. to prove that i'm extra stupid, i agreed to get into the back of a truck to drive to greg's place (three blocks from tre via) before we went to crobar. to prove that i'm a total fucking moron, i got into the back of said truck in front of four cops who were standing on the sidewalk, assured that we wouldn't get a ticket because the questionably sober girl who would be driving us went over and asked them if it would be ok while we sat in the back of the truck and drank wine that johnny stole off the wall at tre via. genius at work.
blah blah blah house music at crobar blah blah blah dumb drunk people blah blah blah fake boobs blah blah blah fat old bald guys in suits picking up gold-diggers. fill in any drunken trip to crobar you've ever taken in your life where you acted like a total ass and that summed up the experience.
i hit up sky captain on sunday with emily and it was a lot better than a few people had told me. cheese from beginning to end, but that's exactly what you need if you're going to use that much sepia.
tonight was more tre via and some danny's with a bit of flash taco thrown into the mix. i'm dying for the opportunity to make a flash taco/flesh taco joke wherein i can reappropriate the line from harold & kumar where nph says "I've been craving burgers too... FUR BURGERS!"
that was too much typing, but j3s keeps telling me i need a photoblog, so she better be happy with this, dammit. |

remember 2-step? man, what a waste of potential that genre was. i know it's still chugging along (or chuggin somethin), but it's not really the same. some of the grime shit is pretty hot, i guess, but for every wicked markone track out there, there's a blazin squad cover of bone thugz n harmony.
i guess you should never trust a style of music that has more names than it has good songs (2-step, sublow, breakstep, grime, dubstep, 8-bar, etc).
this came about because i was bored on the plane yesterday, so i just went through every uncompleted song on my hd and there were like 40 2-step beats that i made. i think the only 2-step track i ever actually finished was that shite remix of marumari i did:
atomly - marumari 2-step megamix
according to Urb magazine, "[atomly] hits the bull's eye with this unlikely menage-a-trois of Marumari melodic parts, a loop of Canadian goose honks and a spot-on two-step shuffle," but i'd have to say the song blows ass.
anyway, the whole point of this is, are there any new and interesting genres out there? i'm into some of the new jungle stuff-- the "subvert central" style shit with chopped up beats and all that. i've even started making songs on the harder end of that style (check, for example, this tune i did with enduser...) and i like some of the grime out there (though a lot of it sounds like a british take on dj icey)...
so if you have any suggestions of some styles to check out, please post 'em here. |

holy crap i almost fell out of my chair laughing at this snopes article!!! i don't know if any of you have ever seen the tribute to goatse.cx, but it's hilarious... this, however, takes hilarious to a new level. insert joke about "(brown) eye of the hurricane" followed by joke about "insert" and "brown eye" in the same sentence. cue laugh track and star-wipe out. |

i'm almost done with my "too many shows in one month" stint now, which is good. louisville this weekend and possibly chi (though that's looking cancelled) and it's looking like the thing in washington isn't happening either, which is kind of a blessing in disguise. i need to lay off the shows for a minute and regroup, try to work on some tracks and get my records out the door like they're supposed to. i have too much shit on the verge that i just need to take care of and i haven't been able to since i haven't had a weekend in town in months.
the show with hidden/urbane/chamberweed at lura last week was wicked-- made me remember that i miss playing breakcore shows. it was great to hang out with noel too. damn, i need to get back to europe.
ny was a ton of fun. my whole family decided to show up (my parents from nd and my brother and his wife from or) and none of them had ever really been there, so i got to do all the touristy stuff that i've never done there. it was good to see my family and good for my parents to go somewhere more exciting than minneapolis.
the show with cylob, derek and mark at happy ending went awesome-- way better than i even expected. i thought it would be a good time but it was pretty nuts. it's always a good sign when the venue owner comes up to you at the end of the show and keeps thanking you. 600 people showed up and everybody just killed it. cylob played acid and grime, mark played a bunch of acid, old rave and disco and derek played all kinds of new acid shit (mathew johnson, matt dear, etc)... even the people i didn't expect to got into it. i wasn't exactly expecting break circles and girls dancing on tables, but whatever works. :)
the weirdest thing about the show was having my whole family, jeff's whole family, zoe, salma, derek, etc, there. divergent groups of people that i never really expected to have all in the same room, especially when that room is a seedy massage parlor converted to a club. also, it was the first time my parents had ever seen me play a show, which is pretty funny.
the show at danny's was a lot of fun but i was worn the hell out by that time. i managed to not sleep on sunday night since i went out with derek and then had a 6am flight back to chi. i was a wreck.
anyway, pics from all of this are here, courtesy of my new casio ex-z40 that i purchased while i was in nyc. |
